Mini-splits and heat pumps in Los Angeles

Repair and installation, including houses built without ducts. One outdoor unit can cool a room in August and heat it in January.

Same day when you call by noon. Open 7 days, 7am to 8pm.

A ductless mini-split unit on the wall of a converted garage used as a home office

Think of a heat pump as an air conditioner that can also run in reverse, moving heat out of the house in summer and into it in winter. Take away the ducts and the result is a mini-split: an outdoor unit feeding a head on the wall of each room that needs one. In a house built without ducts, or a garage turned into an office, it is usually the simplest way to get both.

Where a mini-split fits

  • A house with no ducts, heated until now by a wall or floor furnace
  • A converted garage or an ADU
  • An addition the original ducts never reached
  • One bedroom that stays warm while the other rooms are cool
  • A furnace and an AC getting old together, replaced by one heat pump

Before the quote

Your technician walks the rooms with you and asks which ones you use, and when. Then the practical part: where each head can go, and where the outdoor unit can sit.

The quote names each head and the room it is for. For a heat pump on existing ducts, it says whether the ducts can stay.

The day it goes in

The outdoor unit goes on a pad or a wall bracket, and each head needs one small hole through the wall behind it. We pull the permit for the installation. Its fee is between you and the city, and our quote leaves it out.

Before we leave, every head is run in cooling and in heating.

Looking after it

Mini-split filters need washing every few weeks while the system is working hard, and the coil inside each head needs cleaning now and then, or the heads start to drip and smell musty. On the plan, the spring visit covers the cooling side, and the fall visit runs heat mode and checks the defrost cycle.

What changes a mini-split's price

  • If a heat pump replaces a furnace, whether the existing ducts can be kept
  • The rooms you want heated and cooled, and how big each one is
  • How far the outdoor unit is from the rooms it serves
  • Whether the outdoor unit sits on the ground or up on a roof
  • Whether the electrical panel has space for another circuit

Questions about mini-splits and heat pumps

Will a heat pump keep the house warm in winter?

For most Los Angeles houses, yes. Our winters are mild by heat pump standards, and a unit sized for the house keeps up on a cold night.

Can a mini-split take over from a wall furnace?

Often. One head in the main room can do the work of a wall furnace, with more heads for the bedrooms if you want them cooled as well. We look at the rooms before saying which.

Do the heads have to go high on the wall?

That is the usual place, because air spreads evenly from up there. Floor and ceiling heads exist for rooms where a high wall will not work, and the quote says which one fits.

Can you repair a mini-split someone else put in?

Yes, whichever company installed it. The usual calls are a head dripping water down the wall, or one showing an error light.
